In 1971, the University Computer Center was established and the teaching of Computer Science was started from the session 1971-72 with the introduction of one year Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Science (PGDCS) with an intake of 10 students. From the session 1973-74, one year professional course called Diploma In Electronic Data Processing and Machines Operation (EDP) was started. In the summer of 1982, UGC's standing committee visited the Computer Center and it recommended and approved two new courses, a three year Master of Computer Science and Applications (MCA) and a one year Post B.Sc. Diploma in Computer Science and Applications (PDCA) in place of earlier PGDCS course, along with the faculty positions, technical staff and initial grants. These courses were started from the session 1983-84 with an intake 20 students in each course initially, which was subsequently raised to full sanction strength of 30 in each. In 1988, Department of Computer Science was created and started its functioning as an independent department since 1989. Since then the Department of Computer Science has been continuously engaged in producing well trained and quality IT professionals. In addition to this the department is associated with the process of computerization of various departments and offices and spreading computer awareness and IT culture among teachers, research scholars, students and staffs of the University as well as various business sectors such as Banking, Insurance etc. The department is presently catering to the needs of about 500 students annually with sanctioned faculty strength of 11 (1 Prof. + 3 Reader + 7 Lectures) only

Ph.D. in Computer Science has been started, while M.Tech. (Information Technology) and .M.Sc. (Computer Science) are planned to be started from the next academic year, subject to its approval by appropriate authorities and availability of additional resources.

The courses offered by the department are job-oriented with almost 100% Job opportunities and placement. The courses are regularly reviewed and updated to keep it in tune with the latest requirements of the IT industry. Our potential recruiters are TCS, Infosys, IBM, Accenture, CSC, BCL, Wipro, JK Tech., Mindfire, Bharti Telesoft, etc.

Facilities: Computing Facilities:

The department is equipped with state-of-the-art computing systems and the computing facilities are available for almost 14 hours a day in the labs of the department. The department maintains its own LAN, which is connected to Campus Wide Network through Fibre to the University Computer Centre. Laboratories: A brief description of the laboratories and IT infrastructure available in the lab is being given below.

1 The Advanced Computing Laboratory (ACL): ACL is equipped with twenty (20) desktop PCs and is used both for programming in C, C++, VC++, Java, Fortran, Visual Basic, etc. and hands on learning by the students of courses like MCA, PDCA, BIT, BCA etc.

2 The General Computing Laboratory (GCL): GCL is equipped with twenty desktop PCs, and is used for general purpose computing. There are many specialized software, like SPSS, MATLAB etc., available along with Internet connectivity.

3 The Communication Laboratory: This lab is primarily used for advanced network programming. This lab is equipped with Linux Server and about twenty systems.

4 Hardware Lab: This lab is equipped with microprocessor kits, PC assembly kits and devices related to electronic experiments.

System/Devices: The labs are equipped with advanced computing systems, like:

Software's: Besides having compilers of various languages, Computer Center and lab have acquired the various software to meet the computing needs of users. Students are provided working environments on various platforms like:

Library:

In addition to the facilities of Central Library, the departmental "Seminar" library is equipped with latest IT books, magazines, journals etc specially meant for computer science and IT students, which provides supportive and encouraging environment. Library has subscriptions to a large number of magazines, journals etc., providing an immense source of primary knowledge for academic and research activities. The library services are manned and maintained by a team of dedicated, qualified and experienced staff, who give full assistance to all the library users

The Department provides placement assistance to MCA/BCA/BIT/BCM students. Our regular recruiters are TCS, Accenture, CSC, HCL, JK Tech., Bharti Telesoft, Adobe, Mindfire, Persistent, Expert, etc.
