Research in this programme area includes, biopharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic strategies to optimise drug therapy in patients; consideration of adverse or toxic events to minimise harm. The study of drug and food metabolic interactions in special populations; toxicovigilance and optimal use of medicines; drug utilization studies, combined with pharmacoeconomics to minimise wastage and optimise use of medicines.
The underlying theme of this programme area is to improve the use of medicines. Several projects explore medicines use in the community, impact of patient counselling, compliance studies on polypharmacy patients. This includes using large datasets to examine medicine use by gender, age, and socio-economic status. Other projects look at the extent of medicines wastage in the community, medication errors, and the use of herbal medicines.
