Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering

The department of Mechanical Engineering presently located in Engineering Science Block II, was the first department to be started along with the institution, founded by the great philanthropist, educationalist and visionary, Late Dr. M.S. Ramaiah. The department was started initially with student strength of 60 and staff strength of 8. Over the last 42 years, the department has grown in all magnitude and presently has an intake of 180 and faculty strength of 44. All the faculty members possess post - graduate degrees.

The department was affiliated to BU and later to VTU. Now due to its outstanding achievements in various core competent areas, the college received its Autonomy Status during August 2007; in addition the two M.Tech Courses in Manufacturing Sciences & Engineering, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing also received the autonomy status. The department is a research center approved by VTU and at present has 25 researches pursuing Ph.D. The department prime focus is on faculty development as the prime requisite for achieving the short - term, medium term and long term departmental goal.

The faculties of the department are the source of its strength. Duties related to University work such as like paper setting, valuation etc., are well performed by the staff. Some of the Professors are members of BoS, BoE for VTU and BU for the Mechanical Stream/Many faculty members have authored books and published technical papers in national/ international journals / conferences. Some of the faculty are well known for their innovative ideas with active involvement of students as their final year project work. Many of these projects carried out in the department have received awards and wide appreciation by public and media. The department was invited as a participant in IMTEX - 2007, as a result of these innovative projects, one of only three academic bodies invited for the mega - event.

The department conducts a number of short-term professional courses for the benefit of engineering faculty (internal and external), students and personnel from the industry. A few of the recently conducted are

National Conference on " Mechanical Engineering Design "

STTP on Advanced Trends in Thermal Engineering"

Seminar on Bio Engineering

National Forging Seminar

Seminar on Mechatronics & MEMS

Seminar on Technological Advances in Metrology

National Conference on Mechanical Engineering

The department conducts an annual seminar in memory of the Founder, Late Dr. M.S. Ramaiah, The First MSR Memorial Seminar on "Advanced Materials Trends & Technologies", AMTT-2003, was organized on 3rd MAY 2003.

The annual seminar that was conducted on MAY 15th was focused on Materials & Materials Processing". The department has made MOU with the University of Agricultural Sciences for coordinating research and PG programs. MOU's with CPRI, Bangalore and NITK, surathkal.

The department has also spearheaded the concept of a Rolling Conference in Mechanical Engineering - "NATCON.ME" supported by VTU and sponsored continuously by SIX engineering colleges with mechanical engineering research centers will be an annual event organized by the sponsoring colleges by turns.

The First NATCON - ME was organized on 12th and 13th March 2004. NATCON rolled over to GCE, Ramanagaram in 2005 and SIT Tumkur in 2006 and was held at AIT in 2007.

There are close interaction between department and industries like HAL, BHEL, MICO, HMT, and national laboratories like NAL, CPRI, CMTI, and GT&TC as also with educational institutions like IISc, UAS, UVCE and NITK.

The department successfully completed a research project sponsored by DRDO on Carbon Nano Tubes, with a funding of Rs 18.22 Lakhs.

The efforts of the department faculty, experienced supporting staff and conductive atmosphere and availability modern facilities is reflected in the excellent performance of the students, a number of ranks in the UG and PG courses and gold medals.

The Society of Mechanical Engineering (SME) has been formed in 1904 to promote all round development of the students. The Society is involved talks and lecturers, industrial visits, career guidance programs, student's talent search programs, screening of technical films, qui programs, project exhibitions, etc., All students of the department are members of the society and are benefited by the activities.

To encourage the final year students to carry out innovative projects, a project exhibition is arranged every year at the end of academic year. An external panel of judges comprising of academicians and industrialists evaluate the projects prizes are awarded to those projects judged as best by the panel.

The infrastructure in the department, in terms of laboratories, lecture halls, seminar halls, library, etc. is in the process of being refurbished. Funds available under the World Bank aided TEQIP programs are being utilized for the purpose. A Completely new Computer Aided Engineering Drawing Laboratory with 140 systems and Solid Edge Software has been setup. In process of establishing is the Material Processing Lab, with melting/ heat treatment furnaces, bench type sophisticated tensometer, specimen mounting press, abrasive cutter fatigue testing machine, stress corrosion test rig, etc. software like AutoCAD Mechanical, Electrical, Raster Design, VIZ, Autodesk Inventor 11.0 CATIA V5, MD Nastran, MSC Marc, MSC Sofy, Dytran, MSC Patran, MSC Easy, Ansys, Abaqus, LS Dyna, MSC Adams, MSC Altair Hyperworks, HP Laser Jet 5200 DTN (4Nos) have been procured to facilitate research work in the department. The department also has two state of the art Computer Aided Engineering Laboratory, catering to the needs of the Autonomous Syllabus.

Under the overall campus redevelopment plan some laboratories, faculty rooms and lecture halls of the department have been shifted to Engineering Science Block II in February 2008.

The department is committed to fulfill its mission and immediate, medium term and long range goals with its committed faculty, its main strength.
