Course programme

Petroleum and its allied industries are among the fastest growing sectors of India and the world over. In the current situation of competitive technologies and liberalized economies, it is necessary that our engineers be equipped with the fundamental aspects of this industry so that they can face the challenge of developing indigenous technologies for this sector. In view of this, the University Grants Commission sanctioned the establishment of Institute of Petroleum Studies & Chemical Engineering in 1983, in a phased manner. The Institute also got financial assistance from His Highness Sheikh Zaid bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the then president of UAE, who visited Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh on Jan 01, 1975.

Later this Institute was renamed as the Department of Petroleum Studies under the Faculty of Engineering & Technology. The Department is successfully serving the much felt need of deploying young men in petrobased industries and is bridging the gap between academic institutions and industrial requirements.

Crude Evaluation Laboratory:

The laboratory holds outstanding facilities like TBP distillation and PONA analysis by FIA method for the evaluation and characterization of petroleum crude. Various other deterministic tests can be carried out for analysis of petroleum like determination of sulfur content, asphaltenes content, sediment content, moisture content, viscosity measurements, API gravity and specific gravity etc.

Petroleum Products Testing Laboratory:

A wide range of testing instruments is available in this laboratory from determination of different proerties of various petroleum products like gasoline, kerosene, diesel, lube oils, waxes, greases, bitumen etc. Some of the prominent ones include ASTM distillation for determination of volatility characteristics, Reid vapour pressure test, bomb calorimeter apparatus, automatic aniline point and automatic flash point determination instruments, Ramsbottom carbon residue, copper strip corrosion test, demulsification number of turbine oils, acidity of transformer oils and sulfur contecnt determination by bomb method along with various other testing facilities like API gravity, specific gravity, cloud point, pour point, drop point of grease, melting point of wax, sediment content etc.

Process Control Laboratory:

This laboratory is equipped with the most advanced and sophisticated computer interactive instruments for the study of dynamics and control of interacting and non-interacting systems, control of heat exchanger temperatures, characteristics of control valve, pressure control trainer, flow control trainer etc. Experimentation facilities are also available for calibration of pressure gauge and bimetallic thermometer, dynamics of thermometer, control of liquid level systems, distributed control system etc. A process simulator for studying the control of various Refining operations and processes is the latest addition to this laboratory.

Reaction Engineering Laboratory:

The laboratory provides an opportunity to understand the basics of the chemical reaction kinetics course through experimentation. Kinetic studies in a batch reactor and a tubular reactor can be carried out along with study of kinetics of solid-fluid reactions, RTD in CSTR, study of CSTRs in series etc. Hydrodynamic studies of Trickle Bed reactor can be carried out. Experimental set-up for packed bed is also available for research works. Instruments are available for the determination of surface area and pore volume of a catalyst. In addition a high pressure reactor and a high pressure liquid phase reactor are also available for research studies.

Polymer Laboratory:

Polymer lab is the latest addition in the Department. Considering the importance of Polymeric materials, we have introduced this lab in our undergraduate lab course work. The focus of this lab is to impart technical knowledge among students on the following areas of 'Polymer Science and Technology':

1 Synthesis of high polymers.

2 Identification and characterization of polymeric materials

3 Testing of Plastics materials as per ASTM standards.

Although this lab is under development phase, it is equipped with lab scale facilities for Polymer Synthesis, Digital Refractometer, Computerized Tensile Testing machine, HDT/ VSP Tester, Coefficient of Friction Tester, M.F.I. Tester, E.S.C.R. Tester, Density Gradient Column etc.

Unit Operations Laboratory:

The students are provided opportunity to get well acquainted with different unit operations by conducting number of experiments related to heat and mass transfer, fluid mechanics and mechanical operations.

Computational Facilities:

The Department has good computational facilities to make students competent in the use of different types of softwares and windows based packages. The latest additions are softwares like Matlab and Petroplan.

Seminar:

The Department has a collection of some of the best titles of the Petroleum Industry. Besides, literature is available on basic Chemical Engineering courses. Seminar also preserves and makes available conference proceedings and the material given by prominent visitors who deliver invited lectures on topics of current industrial importance.
