A Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.; New Latin Pharmaciae Doctor) is a professional doctorate degree in pharmacy. In some countries, it is a first professional degree, and a prerequisite for licensing to exercise the profession of Pharmacist. The first Pharm.D program was established at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy in Los Angeles, California in 1950 .Pharmaceutical engineering is a branch of pharmaceutical science and technology that involves development and manufacturing of products, processes, and components in the pharmaceuticals industry (i.e. drugs & biologics). While developing pharmaceutical products involves many interrelated disciplines (e.g. medicinal chemists, analytical chemists, clinicians/pharmacologists, pharmacists, chemical engineers, biomedical engineers, etc.), the specific subfield of "pharmaceutical engineering" has only emerged recently as a distinct engineering discipline. This now brings the problem-solving principles and quantitative training of engineering to complement the other scientific fields already involved in drug development.

About this course
The objectives of the Ph.D. program in the Department of Pharmaceutics are:
• To provide a foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences in general, as well as in the specific
tracks identified, with emphasis on pharmacokinetics, biopharmaceutics, pharmaceutical
analysis, pharmaceutical technology/drug delivery, pharmacodynamics, pharmaceutical
biotechnology, and drug design and discovery.
• To educate individuals capable of conducting independent research and with in- depth
specialized knowledge in one of the above areas and to provide a solid educational, technical
and experiential foundation for students in the industrial, academic, governmental or other
arenas.
• To provide an environment that nurtures and stimulates the research interests and the
intellectual advancement of students and faculty, including a forum for scientific and
professional discussion.
