The Institute offers Phd. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. It has been a center for research in various related fields of study from time to time. These include –

* Plasma engineering
* Microprocessor applications
* Fractional horsepower electric machines

Research is also going on in the areas of intelligent instrumentation and clean and efficient heating. Emphasis has also been laid on the application of neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm based evolutionary computations in the areas of control system, power system, complex analysis and design and biomedical instrumentation. It has a good record of successfully completing projects related to classification of signal using advanced digital signal processing techniques, stochastic control based forecasting, image processing, neuro-fuzzy based medical diagnosis etc.

BIT Mesra has constantly been amongst frontrunners in the domain of technical education and research.When the research constitutes a Doctoral programme, it leads to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, (Ph.D.). The objective of this programme is to impart research training to the scholar, and prepare him for a career in independent investigation and original research that would make a significant contribution to knowledge in his/her field and profession.
