The course aims to enable learners to understand the roles and responsibilities of those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools, and provides an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to do this effectively and in a self-directed way. It prepares learners to support the Teacher and the delivery of curriculum within a school, as well as developing skills to help children and young people to develop self esteem, independence and skills for learning. It seeks to further develop professional and technical skills and knowledge, and an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school.

Students are required to compile a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates their learning against each of the assessment criteria of the course. Portfolios are assessed by a tutor. Some portfolio evidence will need to be witnessed by a competent person in the workplace hence students must be employed in school or arrange and complete a work experience placement
This course is marked through a process of continuous assessment guided by your tutor following NCFE guidelines. This means that your qualification will be awarded according to your performance on assessments rather than by taking an exam.
When you have completed the programme, your tutor needs to verify that you have worked through all parts of any Workbooks, Activities and Exercises successfully.
Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, you will be awarded your Award by NCFE & EDL as confirmation that your written work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme.

We recommended you spend approximately 180 hours of your time studying for the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. The pace of study is completely up to you. Teaching Assistant
As a teaching assistant you would support teachers with their everyday work in the classroom, so that they can concentrate on teaching. You could have another job title such as classroom assistant or learning support assistant. Your exact duties would vary depending on the school and the age of the children, but would typically include: getting the classroom ready for lessons listening to children read, reading to them, or telling them stories helping children who need extra support to complete tasks helping teachers to plan learning activities and complete records supervising group activities looking after children who are upset or have had accidents encouraging younger children to learn through play helping with outings and sports events carrying out routine administrative tasks. You would also support children with particular individual needs, working one-to-one or in small groups. With experience, you could lead some classes. In some schools you could have a specialism, such as literacy, numeracy, Special Educational Needs or music. Bilingual teaching assistants are often employed in schools with a lot of children whose first language is not English. Higher Level Teaching Assistant As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) you would have more responsibility, which could include: working alongside teachers to support learning activities helping to plan lessons and prepare teaching materials acting as a specialist assistant for particular subjects leading classes under the direction of the teacher supervising other support staff. You would also assess, record and report on the progress of children you work with.
