History

Established in 1990, originally as the Symbiosis Institute of Journalism & Communication (SIJC), the Institute was renamed in 1999 as the Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication (SIMC) to enable the Institute to go beyond journalism and introduce other media-related courses in the curriculum in keeping with industry requirements. Going with the times, SIMC has been finally christened Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication. SIMC has evolved into a leading media and communication education and training Institute, providing the industry with trained and competent professionals. We are now a constituent of Symbiosis International University.

Advantages of studying here

These events enable an interactive exchange and facilitate dialogue for the participants, media and the industry at large. In the classroom, industry experts who teach our trainees not only refer to academic sources but also weave in assignments that require trainees to seek industry interaction. The course requirements of industry projects also sets the challenge for media trainees to work at the industry standards, familiarizing them with the work pattern and demands of the erstwhile media industry.

The method of instruction at SIMC is driven by its commitment to providing the industry with skilled and trained media professionals adept in all fields of communication. The focus is upon instructing its trainees in both the theoretical and practical aspects of communication encourages students to respond swiftly to professional challenges.

Description

The word 'Symbiosis' is a biological term to describe a mutually beneficial co-existence of two living organisms. To those who know Symbiosis, and its founder Dr Shantaram Balwant Mujumdar, it is not surprising that he chose this word. Dr Mujumdar was a professor of botany in the well known Fergusson College in Pune, in 1971, when an extraordinary incidence inspired him to start an International Cultural and Educational Centre. He named it Symbiosis. It was to be a home away from home for the international students who came to study in India. Symbiosis is a unique space where foreign students can exist in harmony with Indian students.

SIMC's mission is to serve the multi-faceted needs of the media and communications industry in particular, and society in general, through education, training, research and advocacy. We seek to develop competent, responsible and innovative professionals in the practice, development and management of media and communication. We offer Masters in Journalism and Audio-visual Communication and Management degrees in Advertising and Public Relations. Our alumni are now in well-placed positions across various media.

We have now moved to a spacious new campus amidst nature at Lavale, a fully residential campus with the best studio facilities, and an area that spreads over 300 acres. Many other Symbiosis Post-graduate institutes share this massive space. Aptly named Symbiosis Knowledge Village, this campus aims to be the seat of post-graduate educ
