If there is one nation that is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and historical tradition then it must be India. Indian music culture has always been at the forefront of cultural revival. It is in existence since centuries and contributed memorably to the evolution of world music.

The most attractive aspect about Indian music is variety and class. India is a sum total of diverse regions and all the regions in India have their own culture and tradition. Go to eastern part of India and you will find it entirely different from what south Indian music offers. This difference is at the root of richness of Indian music. But one thing is similar in all these states. They all celebrate beauty of life with music and dance. Our focus in this article is Assamese music and no wonder; it thrives on its deeply rooted culture and uniqueness.

Assam music belongs to state of Assam that is in the northeastern part of India. Diversity is the buzz word in this music. The state has given Indian music wonderful songs and classical artists. All these artists have made a mark for themselves in the broader arena of Indian culture. Assamese music is also known as ethnic music. It has managed to retain its purity despite the advent of western music. The admired genres existing in the region are Bhakti, folk music, Geet and Bihugeet etc. There are several sub-categories as well. Major among them are, Nisukoni geet, Jhumar, Kamrupiya Lokageet, Husori, Goalpriya Lokgeet, Gorokhiya Naam and Bharigaan etc.

If we converse about singers, there are numerous talented people like Dr. Huzrat. A nationwide award winner, he has created a position for himself. Other musical talents that have made a mark for themselves are, Khagen Mahanta, Luit Konwar Rudra Baruah, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha, Zubeen Garg Parboti Prasad, Jayanta Hazarika and Rupkonwar Samar Hazarika to name a few.
