This branch specializes in the development of new technology for use in aviation, defence systems and space explorations. The development and research of commercial and military aircraft, missiles, space ships and related equipment are the field of work of an aeronautical engineer.

There are many career opportunities open to aeronautical graduates. Besides the obvious ones within the aerospace industry, aeronautical graduates are in constant demand in other manufacturing industries and engineering consultancies. These include all forms of transport (air, road, rail and marine), nuclear reactor technology, offshore structures and the electricity supply industry.

Jobs are available with aircraft-manufacturing units. In the Indian context, the defence service and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) happen to be two major employment providers. Moreover, aeronautical engineers often get employment in organsations such as Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Defence Research and Development Laboratories, National Aeronautical Lab, Aeronautical Development Establishment, Civil Aviation Department and such other places.
