Security & Protection: Security vs. protection, classification of threats, Protection: capabilities vs. access control rights, Techniques of protection: Protection Domains, Passwords, Cryptography, Classification of threats
Distributed Operating Systems:
Motivation: Resource Sharing, reliability, speedups & communication, Design issues: Transparency, distribution of control, Reliability, Networking Issues: Topology, Protocols & RPCs, Synchronization & ordering of events: problems posed by the lack of global states, deadlocks, resource control.
Multiprocessor Os Issues: Objective, multiprocessor architecture, micro kernels, multiprocessor OS concurrency issues.
File System: Introduction to basic concepts of device management, evaluation, issues & concepts, case study
Structured & Modular Concurrent Programming: Motivation, synchronization, monitors, condition variables, Dijkastra�s guarded commands & alternate command, process communication, study of support from programming languages like ADA
Unix Case Study: Driver interface, configuration of the system, system calls for the devices, data structures & OS provided calls for the device drivers, Raw mode & canonical mode of operation of the terminal, terminal polling
