Course programme

The jewellery sector in India is worth over US$16.7 billion per annum. The sector forms nearly 20% of the country's exports. Domestically also, as a result of socio-economic changes, jewellery is quickly becoming a lifestyle product. As consumers become more aesthetically conscious and quality becomes standardized, design concerns emerge. Design is therefore the key element which drives demand and sales. The scale of the industry and the paucity of trained designers offer ample scope for professionals in this field. The 4-year Jewellery Design programme opens up rewarding career options as well as an opportunity to earn an internationally recognized degree.
LEVEL 1: Knowledge, Skills and Concepts
Students are imparted with an understanding and awareness of historical, social and cultural contexts; they also hone their knowledge of contemporary design issues, drawing upon a historical continuum. There is emphasis on individual visual research, design presentation techniques, practical & theoretical aspects of gemology, jewellery construction and technical communication. Students are provided a need
based opportunity in studying an international language such as German/French/Spanish/ Chinese depending upon market/industry need and for better prospects of the students' professional career.
LEVEL 2: Application and Practice
At this level, students are taught to integrate principles of design with technical expertise and market intelligence. They are introduced to the various commercial aspects of the industry. They learn to work independently and evaluate & analyse their own development through various projects oriented to realistic design complexities. Exposure is given to various aspects of organisational structures, business and design practices, IPR, design protection and enterprise development concepts. This level also provides an opportunity to students to opt for a semester study elsewhere in India or abroad at an approved institute or undergo a rigorous industry internship for a considerably long duration. Internship in the industry gives the student adequate commercial exposure that proves quite fruitful in the long run. This level also provides them an opportunity to do a researchbased project in the area of Jewellery. The learning of international language continues. Students who do not opt for study overseas or in any other reputed national institute may continue to pursue their area of interest at the academy itself.
LEVEL 3: Consolidation
This level is completely delivered in project mode where emphasis is on independent learning. The students are exposed to dynamic business environments and make professional decisions in a given/chosen context. They are also required to take teamleading positions and mobilize all resources to achieve results with focus on applied knowledge of learnt principles in the business/industrial context. They should be able to demonstrate successfully their own philosophy & style. This level aims to produce a creative, well-informed and motivated professional with the ability to analyze, synthesize and conclude various complex issues related to design, planning and technical management. In this level, a student can opt to take up a long industry project or undergo a long module on any specialized area within the discipline. The first part of the level provides students with a choice of either tying up with the industry for training or selects a brief for a project from the industry. In the later part during the Final Design Project, students will be encouraged to develop individual approaches to design development and will produce work which is both original in concepts and diverse in outcomes.
