B.Sc. MLT Pathology

Medical Laboratory Technology aka Clinical Laboratory Medicine is the application of laboratory techniques to find out the cause of a disease. Clinical Laboratory testing is regarded as one of the several important sources of clinical data essential for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of a disease. Clinical Laboratory Medicine involves all aspects of medicine ranging from the fields of hematology, immunology, clinical pathology, histopathology & cytology, blood banking technology, cytogenetics, molecular pathology, biochemistry & microbiology, serology etc.

The purpose and function of laboratorians or lab-technicians through laboratory medicine are to assist clinicians/physicians in

* Confirming or rejecting a diagnosis
* Providing guidelines in patient management
* Detecting disease through case finding or screening
* Establishing a prognosis and
* Monitoring follow-up therapy.

The operation of a clinical laboratory and effective delivery of services to clinicians, patients and public requires a complex inter-digitation of

* Expertise in Medical, scientific and technical areas
* Resources in the form of personnel, laboratory and data processing equipment, supplies and facilities and
* Skills in organization, management and communication.

The increasing cost of medical care mandates that the responsibility of proper and optimal utilization of clinical laboratory falls on the Lab-technicians and physicians, while providing the best service for the patient.

Scope

With only a couple of branches in Medical Sciences which are as diversified as Medical Lab Technology in their clinical and practical applications; it is no doubt truly a job oriented course. The ever-expanding horizon of Laboratory Science creating umpteen job-opportunities and limitless application possibilities hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, pathology labs, Research Institutes etc. both in India as well as abroad are continuously on look out and placement (through campus interviews) of these trained personnels on good perks. MLT graduate with academic mind-set and teaching-inclination can pick up teaching jobs in reputed medical & paramedical institutes. Blood Banks and Transfusion Services are other potential areas of intake of trained MLT professionals. Degree-holders who are willing to serve the rural population can work in Primary Health Service Centres and Govt. funded dispensaries.

Professionals pursuing higher studies may opt for Post Graduation in the field of Pathology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry. Research oriented areas in this field viz. Cell Biology, Molecular biology, DNA probes, Genetics, Neurobiology, PCR, Plasma research, Immunology to name but a few. "Telecommunication in Pathology" (Telepathology) - an indispensable part of the rapidly emerging concept of "Telemedicine Services" throughout the world - is another fascinating area, where technical skills of MLT personnels can be optimally utilized for assistance in the development of regional Health-Care facilities. The new field of molecular diagnostic with techniques permit identification of carriers of genetic diseases, diagnosis of viral and bacterial infectious, monitoring of cancer therapy, DNA fingerprinting for forensic (medico-legal) analysis and detection of cancer markers that assist in assessment of prognosis.
