The Programme
Automobile engineering is one of the options available for graduate-level study in engineering. It is a four-year professional programme. Selection is based on the rank in the entrance examination. Meritorious Plus Two students appearing for the final examinations are also eligible to appear in the entrance examination. Automobile engineering or automotive engineering is the branch of engineering which deals with the study as how to design, manufacture and operate automobiles like buses, trucks, cars etc. and also their respective engineering subsystems. This can also be a grouped under vehicle engineering.

Automobile engineers can further specialize in the areas such as aerodynamics, alternative fuels, chassis, electronics, emissions, ergonomics, manufacturing, materials, motorsport, power train, rapid prototyping, vehicle and pedestrian safety or supply chain management etc. The responsibility of automobile engineer is always in maintaining the high standard of vehicle by the use of traditional methods and state-of-the-art technology. With the rapid growth of automobile industry in India, the demand for qualified and skilled automobile engineers has increased in recent times, Automobile engineering involves understanding the mechanics of vehicle chassis, internal combustion engine, electrical systems, motor transport, workshop technology, research and design. It also deals with the design, development and maintenance of automobiles and related spare parts.

Job Prospects & Career Option
An automobile engineer tests the performance and efficiency of the engine chassis and transmission system apart from other components. They also ensure proper lubrication of vital parts and make adjustments to the mechanism to ensure optimum performance. Automobile maintenance engineers are also entrusted with the general supervision of mechanics in a workshop, factory or garage. Moreover, they may be involved in the design of new models. Automobile and ancillary industries provide many job opportunities to qualified engineers in their production plants. Several other private motor repair and maintenance service stations, automobile garage or workshops offer job opportunities to qualified automobile engineers.
