The rapid strides made by our industries and the revised expectations of our society call for agile minds equipped with skills to tackle areas as diverse as Technology and Human Resource. Addressing this need the Department of Social Work, offering specialization in Human Resource Management was established in the year 1999.
The objective of the MSW Course is to prepare candidates for a career in Social Work with special reference to Human Resource Management through interactive and participative process of training, workshops, field work practicum and project work. The course is designed with the aims
* To foster scientific knowledge about the dynamics of problems and issues in our society.
* To cultivate an ability to analyse the ideologies that lead to systematic domination and marginalization of vulnerable groups.
* To promote necessary skills of awareness, skills aiming at empowerment of people and skills in culture-sensitive methods of social change.
* To provide training in applying skills in social work practice and social work research in different fields for achieving desirable changes and development.
* To foster attitudes and values necessary for working with people and organisations, both governmental and non-governmental for achieving the goals of social work profession namely i) to enhance people's capacity for social functioning ii) to improve the quality of life for everyone iii) to promote social justice, iv) provide opportunities for people to develop their capacities to become participating and contributing citizens.
* To bring about a substantial change in the labour market and develop new approaches to the whole of Human Resources Management field.
In the first year, the theory content consists of core subjects in social work and social sciences that are relevant to the practice of social work. In the second year, papers related to the field of Human Resource Management form the core subjects. There are also Supportive and Elective papers introduced under the credit-based system of education, which again are quintessential for the students specializing in Human Resource Management. Theory classes are held on three days a week. The Concurrent Field Work days are Wednesdays & Fridays.

Main: Papers directly concern with Social Work. The credits given are three.
Supportive: Directly focus to enhance the knowledge and skills - 3 credits.
Elective: Enhance the knowledge base to improve skills, based on the choice of the students - 2 credits.
Field Work Practice: The students undergo Field Work Practicum consisting of:
* Observation Visits
* Concurrent Field Work (all four semesters)
* Skill Development Workshop
* Rural Camp and Industrial tour
* Summer Placement (at the end of the first year)
* Field Work Conference
* Block placement (required for course completion)
Field Work is an integral part of the total programme of training in Social Work. It consists of practicing social work methods under the guidance of Professional Social Workers in the selected field. Such placements provide an opportunity to the students to apply theory to practice and gain first hand experience.
"The rational of Concurrent Field Work is to provide the student immediate situation to apply class room learning in the field and to develop skills over a period of the academic year, as well as recognize the realities of practice in the real world and finally to provide a feed back for discussion and problem solving in the class room. Objectives of Field Work in I year
* To expose and sensitise the students to social needs and problems and enable them to critically analyse problems and select the appropriate means of problem solving.
* To understand the Social Work methods and interventions to deal with human needs, situations and problems.
* To develop the right values and attitudes essential for a Professional Social Worker.
Components of Field Work in I year
The students visit different Social Welfare Agencies and Industries (total of ten) to have an exposure of various settings. They observe the functions and services offered by the organizations and have an orientation towards the working atmosphere of the same.
Social work is dynamic in nature. It requires number of skills - skills in communication, analytical skills, interpersonal skills, self-awareness, skills of the social dramas, mimicry, street theatres / plays and puppet shows through which the social issues, themes and values can be reached to public in an effective way. Workshops are conducted to help the students to gain an insight of these skills.
Concurrent Field Work
Concurrent Field Work is an integral part of Master of Social Work. A minimum of fifteen hours per week shall be put in by each student in the agency. Each semester shall have a minimum of 25 days of Concurrent Field practicum spread over 13 weeks with fifteen hours per week. Classroom instructions and Field Work shall be arranged on a concurrent basis (Wednesdays and Fridays) all through the two-year period.
Rural camp can rather be called an integration camp. Firstly, it integrates the students as one unit. Secondly, it helps in integrating the Social Work values with the rural population and acquiring knowledge of the village community. The students select a village and stay with them for a minimum of eight days (excluding travel) and experience the real village life.
Objectives of Field Work in II year
* To train students to practice Social Work in the industries.
* To develop skills of problem solving at work at the micro level and change at the macro level.
* To develop professional applications of the theories and concepts learned in the class room and acquire practical knowledge of the HR practices as adopted in various industries.
Components of Field Work II year
The students after completing their first year course will undertake one month of internship training (during the month of May) at different industries to get an insight into the HR practices and observe the day-to-day activities of the HR Departments. They would also undertake projects and special assignments and submit a report to the faculty supervisor when they return for their second year course.
At the start of the second year, a minimum of five industrial visits are arranged in such a manner that the students get an exposure to different sectors - IT, Manufacturing and Service. The prime objective of the visit is to give an orientation to the students at the beginning of the second year so that it gives an insight into the HR practices at various industries. This visit will consist of plant observation and discussion with the staff in the HR department.
Concurrent Field Work
As in the first year the Field Work is concurrently arranged on two days a week (Wednesdays and Fridays) comprising a minimum of fifteen hours a week in the industries. The students will be placed in TWO different industries in the third and fourth semesters. During this period they may observe, learn and practice the social work interventions and the HR related concepts that are applied in the industry and acquire hands-on experience.
The purpose and objective of this study tour is to get an idea of the cultural impact on the HR practices across different industries. Industrial zones outside Chennai are visited for about seven days (excluding travel). During this visit the students are taken to mines, plantations, IT industries, manufacturing industries, service sectors and government industries to observe and learn how the HR activities are practiced in different sectors and choose an industry for building their career.
The students are placed in an industry of their choice and are placed there for thirty consecutive days at the end of the II year. During this period they undertake projects given by the industry. Every Saturday the students report to the Department with their reports and have discussions with the faculty supervisor.
