Course programme

This course is designed with the view that the study of literature has to be contextualised in order to help students address academic and cultural challenges that they meet in their lives. The courseware trains students to not only read, understand and interpret literary and other cultural texts, but also to arrive at cultural questions with a fresh critical perspective. Some of its objectives are:

* To introduce students to texts and reading protocols across genres and disciplines
* To move towards a substantially interdisciplinary approach
* To equip students to pursue advanced learning and research in humanities/social sciences
* To equip students for various professional contexts such as the media, non-governmental organisations, research institutions, education, management and legal studies, activism and community development, and so on

In each of the first four semesters, students will have to attempt one paper in Optional English. In the fifth and sixth semesters, they will have to attempt two papers each. The papers to be studied in each semester are as follows:

Semester 1: The Elizabethan to the Augustan Age

Semester 2: The Pre-Romantics to the Romantic Age

Semester 3: The Victorian to the Modern Age

Semester 4: American Literature

Semester 5: Indian Writing in English, Post-Colonial Writing
