To keep pace with the technological advances in the field of Home
Science, an exercise has been undertaken to
(a) Review
(b) Revise; and
(c) Recontextualise the present curriculum to meet the needs
of the students today, who expect a more professional and
focused academic discipline when they enroll for higher
Home Science has five streams, namely.
• Food and Nutrition
• Resource Management
• Human Development
• Fabric and Apparel Science; and
• Communication and Extension
1. The paradigm for the Bachelor's Honours Programme in
Home Science enables the student to focus professionally in
their chosen area.
(a) Each student begins with a common first year wherein she
is exposed to the entire gamut of the five areas, to enable
her to imbibe the essence of the academic discipline.
(b) In the second year the student chooses a specialization area
(2 papers) of her choice and supports this learning with

2. Home Science is an applied science with many practical and
field experiences, which are an essential part of the Learning
process. Therefore teaching, laboratory work and extension
are integrated into each area of specialization. In the revised
curriculum there is provision for internship/field placements
for 2 weeks in the 3Id year. This provides the student with
an opportunity to interact with the community and
participate in the development process.
3. Reading Lists: The revised curriculum has appended to it
fresh reading lists which are current and also include classic
The student who leaves the portals of the institution would
be an independent and confident person who has acquired
knowledge of self, professional and communication skills.
Thus, she would be able to reach out to the world and pay
back to society its social debt which every student from an
institution of higher learning is obliged to do.
