The department was created under the Faculty of Medical Sciences, BHU on the establishment of the Research and Post Graduate Institute Indian Medicine in the year 1963 for conducting research and imparting specialized and extensive training on scientific lines to the M.D. (Ay.) students.

Department is now acclaimed as the best Ayurvedic Department in the country providing extensive academic, practical, experimental and clinical training in the field of Prasuti (Obstetrics) and Stree Roga (Gynecology).
