Mathematics as a discipline is being taught in this University since foundation of M.A.O. College in 1877, but a major impetus in its alround development was carried out after the establishment of a separate department of Mathematics when the college was elevated to the status of a residential University in 1920. Thus the department of Mathematics is amongst the oldest department of this University and Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad became the first Professor and Chairman of the Department. The Department has had the privilege of having Prof. Andhre Weil on its faculty for about two years during 1930-33 who set it on modern lines, established an excellent library and collected a group of research workers which included D.D. Kosambi and T.K. Vijayranghavan. Since then the department has maintained its tradition and today it stands in the frontline of mathematics department of the country.

The department has a present a faculty strength of 24 which is distributed as follows:

Professors: 10, Readers: 11 and Lecturers: 03.

Apart from engaging themselves in imparting instructions at the under-graduate and post-graduate levels all these faculty members are carrying out research in their respective fields of specialization. The department of Mathematics teaches mathematics to about 1500 undergraduate and 120 postgraduate students. Moreover, there is a considerable number of research scholars for whom M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs are organized. The department has also introduced two new courses on Computer Programming both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. During the past few years the intake of the students of various levels has increased almost two fold but unfortunately no structural facilities could be provided to the department. However, in recognition to its inherent potential of becoming a centre of Mathematical studies, the department was elevated to the status of UGC Department of Special Assistance (DSA) in 1983 and continued this facility upto 2003. Department has also been awarded COSIST in the year 1994.

Research Activities: The whole teaching faculty is actively engaged in research in their respective fields. However, the U.G.C., while granting the D.R.S.-I program to the department has recognized the disciplines of Analysis and Algebra as thrust areas. Apart from this there are two groups whose academic interests are in Lie theory and Relativity. The department has been organizing conferences annually in these areas up to 2003 as well as organizing Refresher courses for teachers of other Universities and Colleges in collaboration with the Academic Staff College of the University. The department has been publishing a research journal. The Aligarh Bulletin of Mathematics, since 1971. It is published annually in one volume, distributed to all Indian Universities and some equivalent foreign institutions on a exchange bases and in exchange of this periodical, the department receives more than 40 journals. From year 2001, each volume of the Aligarh Bulletin of mathematics comprises of two issues.

Equipment: The department has the facilities and equipments in the form of photocopying machines, duplicators and typewriters. It has also acquired a workstation and few Pentium computers. Recently under DSA program the department has acquired 18 computers which are to be used by the faculty members. The Techno-mathematics Lab. Acquires more than 25 computers to be used by the postgraduate and research students of the department. The Astronomy Lab is equipped with two four inches telescopes.

Seminary Library: The seminar library is our pride possession and we claim it to be most valuable mathematics library in any university of the country. During the years which span over a century, we have collected more than 12000 books on higher mathematics (this does not include the undergraduate books which are kept at the central library) and 50 valuable collected works of eminent mathematicians. The library has also been subscribing journals and periodicals (most of the important periodicals are available sine the time they started publishing) whose number has gone down at present due to price rise and the devaluation of Indian Currency.
