Course programme

The Department of Paediatrics was established in 1964 with only 02 teachers and 04 beds in District Hospital of Aligarh viz. Malkhan Singh Hospital. 50 bedded children's ward and neonatal nursery were established in 1970 within the campus of A.M.U. This immensely improved the care of sick babies, training and teaching of undergraduate, postgraduate students and research in child health.

A Level II neonatal nursery was commissioned in 1987 with a Reader (Associate Professor) heading the unit along with a Lecturer (Assistant Professor). A senior resident and 6-7 residents are on floor emergency duty for nursery and provide round the clock services. The Diarhea Treatment and Training Unit (DTTU) was established in 1991 with a lump sum grant from W.H.O. This unit gradually developed into a full fletched "Pediatric Gastro-Entrology, Hepatology and Nutrition Clinic", and upper G.I endoscopy was started in 1999. Eight beds are ear marked for this Unit and a team of residents are on floor emergency duty for this unit only. Two new pediatric wards were constructed in 1997 and total number of beds increased from 50 to 90. A new 10 bedded neonatal unit was constructed in 2001 with all the modern equipments and ventilator. To further improve the care of sick children a 06 bedded "Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit" was started in 2005. A senior resident and 6-7 residents are on floor emergency duty for this unit only. Many sub-speciality clinics are regularly conducted by the consultants of the Department on fixed days. Adolescents constitute 22.80% of population of India and keeping in mind their special needs and its long term impact "Adolescent Friendly Health Clinic" was started in 2002. Pediatrics Pulmonology and Infectious Disease Clinics were also started in 2002. Pediatrics Nephrology and Pediatrics Hemato Oncology Clinics were started in 2006. The number of teaching posts sanctioned for the Department is (1) Professor-1 (2) Reader - 03 (3) Lecturer- 04 (4) Senior Residents - 05. The number of students admitted each year is (1) M.B.B.S. - 150 (2) Diploma in child Health (D.C.H.) - 12 (3) M.D. (Pediatrics) - 06. All the courses are recognized by Medical Council of India (M.C.I.).

The Department can now be raised to an advanced centre of Pediatrics if funds are provided to upgrade the existing facilities. Most of the patients in this hospital are from poor families and providing quality health care to these underserved children under one roof is the need of the hour.
