Course programme
In recent years, the group has provided new inputs through its research,
teaching and consulting on corporate restructuring, merger activity,
competitive strategies and international business. A few optional
courses on these are offered and more are planned.
Since the early eighties three has been growing recognition of cooperative efforts in international business between two or more firms. These arrangement include joint ventures, strategic alliances, R&D partnerships, and consortia and involve technology transfers, licensing agreements, management service and franchising agreements, cross-manufacturing agreements, etc. These cooperative strategies are the results of the trend towards increasing globalisation, hightened global competition, emergence of a number of globally competitive industries from Newly Industrialised Countries, and need for a rapid reduction of product and business development cycles in the recent years. These strategies are further gaining importance, as the loci of global business battles have been shifting towards the emerging markets such as India and China. In this course our aim would be to identify and understand the factors which play a crucial role in the development of such cooperative arrangements and determine how these factors influence the subsequent success and failure of these cooperative strategies. Some of the questions that would be addresses are as follows:
What drives international joint ventures and strategic alliances (IJVs and SAs)?
How do firms benefit from IJVs and SAs?
How are IJVs and SAs designed and managed?
What are the managerial problems that may plague IJVs and SAs?
How to evaluate performance of IJVs and SAs?
A combination of case discussions, role plays, presentations, and interactive lectures will be used as the major learning methods for this course.
