Course in Medical Biotechnology

This course has been designed to provide the student insights into these
invaluable areas of biotechnology, which play a crucial role in determining its future use
and applications in medicine.
Objective: Students get an idea about the advantages and disadvantages of
Biotechnological applications in diagnostic and therapeutics of different challenging
diseases.
Goal: To study the background and scope of disease progression, prevention and therapy.

technology -Vaccines, Monoclonal antibodies.
UNIT-II
MOLECULAR DIOGNOSTICS:
Importance of diagnosis - PCR based diagnosis for infectious disease (HIV, Hepatitis,
and Typhoid), cancer and genetic disorders.
UNIT-III
CELL AND GENE MEDIATED THERAPHY:
Introduction to stem cells - History of stem cell research - Classification of stem cells -
stem cell banking - applications of stem cells - importance of stem cells - regulations of
stem cell research. Gene therapy: out line and methods
UNIT-IV
ASSITED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNIQUES:
Introduction - causes of infertility-Methods: Invitro fertilization (IVF) - Intra-uterine
insemination -Cryopreservation of germ cells.
UNIT-V
TISSUE ENGINEERING:
Introduction - Bio artificial organs - Historical background - Liver - Kidney - Skin -
Pancreas - Urinary Bladder - Bone - challenges and advantages.
