UNIT I
SYSTEMATICS - Classical, numerical, polyphasic and molecular (G+C analysis,
DNA-DNA hybridization, 16s rRNA sequencing and construction of phylogenetic tree)
taxonomy
UNIT II
Archae - as earliest life forms - Halophiles, methanogens, hyperthermophilic bacteria,
thermoplasma
Bacteria - Classification of bacteria (Bergey's manual); salient features of each group of
bacterial group
UNIT III
Viruses - Bacterial, plant, animal and tumor viruses; Discovery, classification and
structure of viruses - DNA viruses, RNA viruses, positive strands, negative strands and
double stranded; replication - lytic and lysogenic
UNIT IV
Classification of fungi (Alexopoulose); salient features of each class - habitat, cell and
thallus organization; nutrition and reproduction
UNIT V
Classification of algae (Smith) salient features of each class; cell and thallus
organization, pigmentation, nutrition and reproduction
