Course in Operations Research - Optimization for better decisions.

The course is designed for the students with background in Mathematics, Economics and Computer Science so that they can exercise analytical skills and creativity in solving real world problems such as resource management, health care, public policy etc. The students are also exposed to a wide range of OR related software such as LINGO, MUPAD, WB8, Solver.

Course Content
1.Definiton of Operational research, Historical development of OR, Methods and tools of OR, Typical OR applications and success stories.
2.Optimization problems, types of optimization problems and areas of applications, linear programming problems and areas of applications, diet problems, time phased LPP etc, Graphical solution of LPP and interpretation of result.
3.Simplex method for solution for linear programming problem, introduction to software package LINGO.
4.Formulation and solution of LPP using LINGO
5.Concept of duality and shadow prices, Interpretation of solution obtained by LINGO through duality.
6.Transportation and assignment problems, real life examples.
7.Formulation and solution of transportation problem and assignment problem using LINGO.

9.Integer programming problem (IPP), Examples of IPP and discussion on solution methods
10.Formulation and solution of IPP using LINGO
