The University of Madras will be entering 157th year of its establishment in 2014-2015. The University of Madras, organized in the model of London University, was incorporated on 5th September 1857, by an Act of the Legislative Council of India. The University of Madras, is one of a handful of universities in India to have been awarded the top-rated ‘A’ Grade accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC). The Department of Geography at the Madras University is one of the oldest Departments in this country. The Department has built high traditions of teaching and research in the past 80 years. The Department currently has academic programmes for M.Sc. (Regular and International Online Programmes) and M.Tech. The M.Sc. and M.Tech Programmes is a much specialised one with heavy inputs on applied aspects of the disciplines especially GIS, Remote Sensing, GPS, EIA and Sustainable Development.
