The Department of Veda is premier Department of the University which was established from the beginning period of the university. The main object of the Gurukul Kangri University was to serve the nation and mankind through Vedas and Vedic literature. Along with great Social-reformer a great Educationist Mahrshi Dayanand Saraswati enact an educational policy in his famous scripture Satyarth Prakash to serve the Ethical, spiritual, moral values, patriotism and indianisation, keeping these views of the education policy Mahrshi Dayanand's disciple Sawami Shradhanand established the Gurukul Kangri University at Haridwar bank of the Ganga river and in the foot hill valleys of the Himalaya.
The Department of Vedas has produced lot of number of the Vedic scholars, freedom fighters, writers, journalists, leaders, sociologists and educationists, who had contributed lot of the nation and as well as today's also and no doubt cause of Vedic studies and department of Veda, Government of India and university grant commission has given special recognition as a deemed to be university in 1962.
The Department of Veda runs under graduate, post graduate and high standard research (Ph.D.) courses. Department also leads inter-disciplinary research work with the other subjects specially with Sanskrit, philosophy, yoga, astronomy, ancient history and ayurveda etc. The chief character of the under graduate, post graduate research courses is to illustrate and explain the Vedic words and hymns and instruction of communication of the Department is in Sanskrit, English and Hindi languages only.
