Course programme

This department of Anthropology at Panjab University, Chandigarh, has established its academic excellence in the field of Anthropology ever since its inception in the month of August, 1960 by the eminent anthropologist of international fame, Late Professor S.R.K. Chopra F.N.A., as its founder head. Since its inception the department has grown in terms of personnel, expertise, equipment, laboratories and library. During the last four decades, the department has contributed significantly to the furtherance of anthropological teaching and research in the country.

The department has earned national and international acclaim in various branches of anthropology. It has made notable discoveries of primate and other mammalian fossils. This is the only department in India which imparts specialized training in the field of palaeo-anthropology. The department is well known for its researches in the fields of human growth and development, sero-genetic studies, medical anthropology, genetic epidemiology, twin studies, and socio-cultural anthropology.

Infrastructure and Laboratories facilities for teaching and research are available in Anthropology, Osteology, Serology and Bio-chemical Anthropology, Palaeoanthropology and Prehistoric Archaeology, Dermatoglyphics, Radiology, Photographic and Sound Recording, Computers. The unique 'Museum of Man' in the Department has a Gallery of Fossil Apes, Primates and Man which includes life-size models, and an Ethnographic Gallery which includes items of material culture. Most of these models were scientifically reconstructed on the fossil material collected by the department from the Siwalik deposits of the region. The museum has earned national acclaim due to its exhibits which are not available in any other institution of the region and has been a focus of attention of print as well as electronic media. The museum is open to public and is regularly visited by school children, researchers and refresher course participants in the University.
The Dewan Bahadur Wali Ram Taneja Gold Medal is awarded annually to the student who stands first with a first division in M.Sc. (H.S.). From the year 2006 Prof. (Dr.) S.R.K. Chopra Memorial Scholarship of Rs.500/- p.m. has been instituted and is awarded to the topper in B.Sc. (H.S.).

Fieldwork is organized by the Department where students are given instructions in the field and research methods and based on empirical work they write dissertations. The Department was recognized as one of the centers under U.G.C. Programme of Special Assistance and Departmental Research Support in 1988, this programme is extended upto 2007 during Phase-III. Active research work is being carried out by the department under SAP programme as well as in other projects undertaken by the faculty in the fields of Palaeoanthropology, Human Growth and Development, Human Genetics, Human Health, Nutrition, Ecology, Medical Anthropology, Dental Anthropology Women and Tribal Studies, Bio-Social dimensions of Gerontology, and Forensic Anthropology.
