In the year 1981, Doctor of Medicine (MD) was initiated which is a 3 year Degree course under the Faculty of Medicine.Many research projects were completed during his tenure and research collaborations with eminent scientists such as Dr. Blumberg, (a Nobel Laureate), Dr. Eric Walker, and other well known international scientists were established. He was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras in 2003. During the years 2004-2006 three faculty members joined the department.
