M.E - Engineering Design

The Structural Engineering Division was established in 1956 with the introduction of Post-Graduate Programme in Structural Engineering and since then it has grown in size, faculty, infra structural facilities and overall outlook to the current status as one of the strongest divisions in the Civil Engineering Department and in the University as well.

It has now ten faculty members (six Professors, one Assistant Professor and three Lecturers), four laboratories (Structural Dynamics Laboratory, Structures Laboratory, Strength of Materials Laboratory, Structural CAD Laboratory) and two academic Programmes (M.E. Structural Engineering and M.E. Construction Engineering and Management). Eight of the ten faculty members are doctorates.

The four laboratories are well equipped with some of the latest instruments and machineries and cater to the under graduate and postgraduate students from Civil and Mechanical Engineering Departments. The division is equipped with a CAD Laboratory having a main server and 16 nodes, which are interlinked by LAN. Most prominent structural analysis software packages like ADINA, NASTRAN, GTSTRUDL, STAAD III and AUTOCAD and project management and control software like PRIMAVERA, EXPEDITION and MONTECARLO are loaded on the systems.

The division is also equipped with a library consisting of nearly 500 volumes, which are useful for the Post Graduate students and research scholars and the faculty.

In addition to the two post-graduate programmes, Structural Engineering Division takes part in teaching under graduate programmes in Civil, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Production, Industrial and Electrical Engineering Departments.

In addition to teaching, the division is undertaking testing of structural and construction materials and also offering consultancy to various prestigious organisations either as part or turnkey projects. In addition, it is also receiving grants from various organisations for sponsored research programmes.

The division is involved in research related to new materials, behaviour of structures, application of new techniques to structural analysis and design of structures for dynamic loads.

As a recognition of its excellence, the division is receiving financial grant from UGC, AICTE, DST and various other organisations and ministries of the Central and State governments.
