Course programme

M.E. (Product Design & Commerce)

To provide the students of Production Engineering with learning facilities comparable to world class standards for innovating products and processes with a multi-disciplinary approach leveraging the power of basic sciences, CAD/CAE/CAM and IT and provide elegant and cost effective solutions to the problems faced by the industry.

The post-graduate programme in Production Engineering commenced in the year 1964. The undergraduate programme in Production Engineering was started in 1973. The department has been accredited for three years by National Board of Accreditation in the year 2005. All the laboratories of the department are approved for carrying out research, leading to Ph.D Degree (full time and part time) by Bharathiar and Anna Universities.

Since the academic year 2000-2001, the department has been recognized as a center for offering PG and Ph.D programmes under Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) of AICTE, for faculty members of various engineering colleges in the country. BE (Production) Sandwich programme was started in the year 2002. Currently there are 20 students pursuing their Ph.D work in the department. About 25 technical papers have been published by the faculty of the department in various National and International journals and conferences during the last academic year. About 30 Sponsored research projects have been completed. Right from the start, the thrust has been given to practically relevant research and development work and regular interaction with the industries. The department offers consultancy in manufacturing processes, design and testing a range of products, as per BIS specifications. The department maintains a close liaison with a large number of universities, industries within the country and outside through faculty research and collaborative projects. The department has obtained funds from DST for improvement of infrastructure in emerging areas and established DST-FIST Product Data Modelling laboratory. Under the financial assistance of DSIR department has established a centre for Product Styling with latest CAD/CAM facilities. Under Women Scientist Scheme (DST) department has an Ultrasonic Welding Laboratory with latest facilities. The department is actively pursuing research in the area of Direct Ceramic Inkjet Printing. The department is well-equipped with laboratories like Center for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing, CAD/CAM centre, PSG-FESTO training center for Pneumatic Automation and Control Engineering, Machine shop, Production and Industrial Engineering Laboratory.
