Course programme

M. Phil. Programme in Botany

Teaching at the Post Graduate Level in the University of Jammu commenced in 1971 to meet the aspirations of the students of this region. The Department was established to train the students desirous of learning, understanding, teaching and practicing various aspects of plant sciences. Courses were designed to take care of both the classical and contemporary aspects of Botany.

Within a short span, the Department earned a name as an important centre of studies in Botany in the country. The hard work put in by the teachers and more so the students started yielding dividends right from the very beginning. Alumni of the department have excelled in fields as varied as teaching, research and administration. While in the initial stages the students had the option of specializing either in Cytogenetics, Mycology or Ecology and Limnology, the department now has both the expertise and infrastructure to help students opt for getting advanced training in many other ares of specialization such as Molecular genetics, Biosystematics, Reproductive biology, Plant pathology, Tissue culture and Bryology.

With the help of grants received from various funding agencies (UGC, DST, DBT, GBPIHED, NRSA etc.) the department is now in a position to let its students unravel the intricacies of plant life even at the molecular level. While conducting research has been an important part of our academics and our research projects have been financed by various national funding agencies from time to time, Research projects worth over Rs. 50 lac are being operated by the staff members. The Department has also successfully completed some consultancy projects.
