M.Sc. in Animal Biotechnology

The School of Life Sciences has been established with an emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and research in modern biology.

The School consists of four Departments:

1) Department of Biochemistry
2) Department of Plant Sciences
3) Department of Animal Sciences
4) Department of Biotechnology

Each of the three departments offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes of study. The Department of Biotechnology offers M.Sc. Biotechnology and M.Tech. in Bioinformatics. These two courses from the Department of Biotechnology are organised with the participation of faculty of the three departments of the School as well as the Schools of Mathematics and Computer / Information Sciences & Chemistry. Under Distance Education Programme, the School is participating in two P.G. Diplomas: one in "Environmental Management" and the other in "Medicinal Botany".

Department of Animal Sciences

The Department offers a four-semester M.Sc. course and Ph.D. program. The Department of Animal Sciences came into existence in March 1993 as a part of academic and administrative restructuring of School of Life Sciences. The department offers M.Sc. course in Animal Biotechnology and possesses reputed faculty and strong infrastructure to conduct research and to train talented young brains in almost all frontier areas of Biotechnology.

Currently 60 students have enrolled for Ph.D. course and working in the research programmes funded by various National (DST, DBT, DRDO, CSIR, ICMR, UGC) and International (The A.P. - Netherlands Biotechnology Programme) Funding agencies and Biotech Industries (Dabur India Pvt. Ltd., ABL Biotechnologies Ltd., NATCO). In recognition of the department's contribution to the biotechnology research the premier biotech industry, the Shantha Biotechnics, Hyderabad offers every year Shantha Excellence Fellowships to 50% of students enrolled in M.Sc., Animal Biotechnology programme. Besides contributing for the Department's teaching, the faculty joins with sister departments to contribute in running M.Sc. Biotechnology course sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. In recognition of its contributions the Department of Animal Sciences is also supported by SAP, COSIST and FIST programmes sponsored by the premier funding agencies like UGC and DST.

M.Sc. in Animal Biotechnology

The M.Sc. Animal Biotechnology course has been developed with emphasis on some traditional and many modern and innovative courses. The students are offered common courses in the first semester such as Genetics, Cell Biology, Biochemistry-I and Microbiology along with students admitted to Post-graduate programs of the School. In the second semester, Biochemistry-II, Immunology, Developmental Biology and Molecular Biology-I are offered. In third and fourth semesters courses in frontier areas of Animal Biotechnology, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, vaccinology, Cellular & Molecular Neurochemistry, Stem Cell Technology & Tissue Engineering, Cancer Biology, Animal Reproduction, Breeding & Transgenic Technology; and In vitro Expression and Downstream Processing Technology are offered. In the third and fourth semesters, the students will have an option to choose electives from other departments in the School of Life Sciences and other Schools. Also the students have to carry out project work in the above mentioned areas.
