M.Sc in Biotechnology

About the Course : Biotechnology is a collection of technologies using cells and biological molecules. Today we can manipulate organisms at the molecular level via genes. Owing to extraordinary specificity of cells and molecules, the tools and techniques of biotechnology are quite precise and are tailored to operate in known, predictable ways. As a result, the products of biotechnology are being targeted to solve specific problems having fewer unintended consequences. Today important thrust areas are Fermentation, Plant and Animal Cell & Tissue Culture, recombinant DNA technology, Antisense technology, Protein engineering technology, Monoclonal antibody technology, Biosensor technology, DNA fingerprinting and diagnostic techniques, Bioinformatics, Biodegradation.

Outline of the course : M.Sc Biotechnology course is spread over four semesters in two years. The first year consists of fundamental a basic course followed by applied subjects in final year, both theoretical and practical aspects of all major thrust areas are covered in the degree program. It is noteworthy that each thrust area is supported by relevant practical/laboratory sessions and thus provides ample hands-on training to students. Industrial visits are integral part of teaching to acquaint students with practical knowledge in the field.
