The University Botany Laboratory was established in 1930. In 1933 Prof. M.O.P. Iyengar took over, as the first permanent Director and established a school of algology. He initiated broad based studies of fresh water, estuarine and marine algae, their systematics, life-histories, morphology and cytology. Much of this work was pioneering so far as India is concerned.
Admission to this Master's course is conducted based on the aggregate of marks scored in the qualifying examination (B.Sc. Botany) plus marks scored in the entrance examination. The course content is split into four semesters and the students have to score a minimum of 50% marks in each subject to qualify for the degree. In addition to the theory and practical examination at the end of each semester the students have to undertake a semester long project work during the fourth and final semester of the course.
