      Master of Science in Plant Breeding & Genetics (M.Sc. Plant Breeding & Genetics). The course offers knowledge on the genetic basis of plant breeding and provides skills in conventional breeding practices, application of biotechnology in plant improvement and variety selection technologies. Plant breeding is a science and art of changing the genetic constitution of plants for the benefit of man. Breeding involves recombining genes from the same species and where technology allows, precise genetic information can be constituted from different species of plants as well as introducing many superior qualities derived from genetic information of other organisms not originally present in plants. Therefore plant breeding builds on knowledge of other life sciences to achieve improved plants that are efficiently produced and that are more beneficial to man.

      · What are the objectives of this course?

      This 2-year program aims to graduates with the knowledge and understanding of the principles in plant improvement and equip them with practical skills for designing and implementing plant improvement programmes. By the end of this program, the student shall be able to: Develop preferable plant varieties that satisfy human needs. Design Plant Breeding Programmes of economic importance. Select appropriate strategies for improving plants of economic importance. Apply appropriate advanced plant breeding technologies. Select appropriate seed production systems and technologies. Recommend appropriate mitigating strategies to the challenges of sustainability of plant improvement.

      The student should have secured a minimum of marks or equivalent grade in B.Sc. (Agriculture/Forestry/Horticulture), to be eligible for this program.
