Introduction to wireless networking, Advantages and disadvantages of wireless networking, Evolution of mobile communication generations- CDMA, FDMA, TDMA. Challenges in mobile computing, Coping with uncertainties, Resource poorness, Banwidth.
Cellular Concept- Cellular architecture, Frequency reuse, Channel assignment strategies, Handoff strategies, Interference and system capacity, Improving coverage and capacity in cellular systems, MAC protocols for digital cellular systems such as GSM, IEEE 802.11 a, b, g, TCP over wireless networks, Approaches to improve transport layer performance.
File System Support for Mobility: Distributed file sharing for mobility support, Coda and other storage manager for mobility support, Introduction to Mobile Transaction and Commerce, Kangaroo and Joey transactions, team transaction. Recovery model for mobile transactions. Electronic payment and protocols for mobile commerce.
Ad hoc Network: Introduction, Routing protocols - Destination sequenced distance vector algorithm, Cluster based gateway switch routing, Global state routing, Fish-eye state routing, Dynamic source routing, Ad hoc on-demand routing, Location aided routing, Zonal routing algorithm.
Security in wireless Networks – Vulnerabilities, Security models, Applications- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Wireless sensors networks
Laboratory- The lab work will be based on the configuration of wireless LANs using access points, routers etc, implementation of WAP protocol stack, wireless programming using Bluetooth, mobile application development etc.
