Course programme

The Department of Women's Studies was started in 1988, the first of its kind in the country in a general University. The Department offers Post Graduate, MPhil and Ph.D., programmes in Women's Studies since its inception. It also offers Master of Social Work programme from 2006.

The Course is interdisciplinary: "Women" being the subject matter of this course, it transcends boundaries of disciplines and eventually assumes Inter-disciplinary nature. The syllabus for the course is so designed as to empower students with adequate knowledge of their rights and privileges and it trains them to emerge as successful change-agents in the desired direction of social transformation. Women's Studies programme of Alagappa University is recognized by the Tamilnadu Government on par with other postgraduate courses for purposes of Scholarship, Employment and Higher Studies.

Women's Studies is an approved subject of study for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) with stipend by the University Grants Commission.

Women's Studies is a subject approved by the UGC for the National Level Eligibility Test to qualify for Lectureship in Colleges / Universities.

Centre for Women's Studies
The Centre for Women's Studies of Alagappa University was established in 1989 as the first University Grants Commission approval Centre in Tamilnadu. Our Centre having played quite significant role in facilitating the National Vision and mission of poverty reduction and removal of discrimination. The activities of the Centre are designed and directed to improve the status of women at all levels. The activities are channeled through Teaching, Training, Research Extension, Documentation, Publication, Dissemination and Transmission, Advocacy, Seminars & Workshops, Networking & Coordinating with other Agencies and Monitoring.
Highlights of the Centre:
  • First University Centre to run Tamilnadu Government Mahalir Thittam.
  • One of the top ten EDP Training Centres in Tamilnadu.
  • Nodal Agency for Gender Sensitization Training Programme for all Police personnel in Tamilnadu.
