Burdwan University Medical College was established in the year 1969 in a hollow brick building (Primary school)) foundation of which was laid down by the then Hon'ble Health Minister Late Nani Bhattacharyaa. First batch of medical students (annual intake of 50 students in number) under the University management were admitted in 1969 later on , due to gross lacuna in infrastructure , said students were migrated to different Medical Colleges at Kolkata

Subsequently, due to enormous agitation on the part of the students, West Bengal Government took over the Medical College from the University of Burdwan on 4th August, 1976. Thereafter, there was steady development of the Medical College & Hospital .

The District Hospital in the name of Burdwan Maharajadhiraj late Bijoy Chand Mahatab was converted to a Teaching Hospital which had initially 759 approved beds and gradually, it increased to 1099 number of sanctioned beds at present.

First batch of MBBS students from this Medical College was graduated in the year 1978 and the said MBBS degree granted by the MCI was included as recognized Medical qualification.
