Course programme

The Department of Microbiology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College was established way back in 1962 the very year in which the Medical college itself was brought into existence. To begin with the department comprised of Bacteriology Parasitology, Serology and Tuberculosis Laboratories. Subsequently the Virology and Mycology Laboratories were established in 1976 followed by Enteric Laboratory. The department now has sanctioned faculty posts of one Professor, three Readers and five Lecturers. The successive MCI inspection in 1968 and 1990 lead to the recognition of the MBBS and MD degrees respectively.

Apart from the research work the focus of the department remains continuous progress in the field of patient care and diagnostics; to provide state of art diagnostic facilities especially to the deprived sections of our society, to reduce the turn around time and to keep a vigilant eye on the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the bacterial and fungal pathogens. Approximately 40,000 investigations are carried out in total every year. The Revolving fund has enabled us to add newer investigations in various laboratories such as ELISA, PCR etc. helping us to keep abreast with time. The Department of Microbiology is dedicated to imparting excellent teaching to the 150 odd MBBS students, 40 BDS 6 MDS and students of various professional courses every year. The postgraduate students MD which usually number around 12 undergo a rigorous training. Their teaching curriculum lays stress on in -house training viz. bench work training amply supplemented by regular seminars, Journal reviews and practical exercises on varied aspects of microbiology. Five students for MD (Microbiology) are enrolled annually. A stream of M.Phil/Ph.D. students have passed from its haloed portals and have done the department proud. As many as 56 students have been awarded MD Microbiology degrees. The Department of Microbiology now comprises of numerous laboratories for specialties like Bacteriology, Virology, HIV/AIDS Lab. Enteric, Anaerobic, Immunology, Parasitology, Tuberculosis, Mycology and Molecular Biology. The AIDS Surveillance Centre which is now known as VCCTC was started in 1993 under the auspices of NACO. The department is deeply committed in upgrading the existing infrastructural facilities so as to provide quality patient care and to enhance the diagnostic and research activities. The thrust areas of research are antimicrobial resistance, phenotypic and genetopic traits of fungi and drug sensitivity, molecular and biochemical studies on malaria. Studies have also been done on Helicobacter, Cryptosporidium, Mycoplasma, Bacterial virulence factors, bacterial and viral diarrhea, hepatitis, HIV etc.
