Course programme

P.hd. Biotechnology

This Discipline with emphasis on multi-disciplinary approach, pursues courses in Biochemistry, Biotechnology & Microbiology. Highly qualified faculty drawn from reputed universities & premier research institutes, the performance & placement of the students has assigned a distinct status to this division. Department of Life Sciences is spread over an area of 30,000 sq. ft.

Besides teaching, the department of life sciences is also engaged in quality research work and has marked considerable progress. Different teachers are engaged in investigations in the field of Bioprospecting, Biodegradation, Molecular Biology, Antibiotics, Proteomics, Immunology and Protein Biochemistry.

Biotechnology is now playing an increasingly important role in our lives. It has emerged from developments in fundamental Bio Sciences in 1970's to become one of the important new generators of industrial wealth and social benefits. The last twenty years has seen an explosion in the application of genetics, cells and their components to reap the products of this technology, which enable to improve the quality of life, from new therapeutic treatment, rapid diagnostic tests to improved disease resistance in crops. Biotechnology has given industry a new ways to make valuable chemicals and to treat its waste. The technology has influenced what we eat, how we wash our clothes and even how we solves our crimes.

Biotechnology is highly multidisciplinary. It has its foundations in many fields including biology, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, chemistry and chemical and process engineering.
It has been considered as a series of enabling technologies involving the practical application of organisms or their cellular components to manufacturing and service industries and environmental management. Historically, biotechnology was an art rather than a science, exemplified in the manufacture of wines, beers, cheeses, etc., where the techniques of manufacturer were well worked out and reproducible but the molecular mechanisms were not understood. With the major advances in our understanding of microbiology and biochemistry, these processes have become better understood and improved.

Modern biotechnological processes now encompass a wide range of new products including antibiotics, vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, the production of which has been optimized by improved fermentation procedures.Biotechnology has been further diversified by a host of new molecular innovations, allowing unprecedented changes to be made to living systems. Transgenic plants and animals are heralding a new age in agriculture, and gene therapy in humans may eradicate many previously incapacitating diseases. In the environment, biotechnology is allowing major improvements in water and land management and also re-mediating the pollution generated by over industrialisation.

Biotechnology encompasses all the basic, applied and engineering sciences, so it becomes more realistic in our approach to give a proper orientation and research aptitude in the varied advance area of biotechnology in which the department is engaged. Presently department is having expertise in the field of Microbial bioprospecting, Fermentation Technology & Industrial Biotechnology, Molecular Diversity, Plant Biotechnology, Cancer Biology in Animal Models, Animal Biotechnology, Genetics, Immunology & Biochemistry. The department is equipped with all instrumentation facilities to carry out the research in above frontline areas of Biotechnology.
