P.hd in Biotechnology Engineering:Environmental Engineering
Biotechnology department was established in 2002 with intake of students of 30 which is enhanced now to 40 and is offering B.E ( Biotechnology) course. There are three faculty members possessing doctorate in Chemical Engineering and Biological Science fields from reputed institutions with varied teaching/research / industrial experience. Another two possess Masters Degree in Biological science. The support from other departments, particularly the Chemical engineering and Medical electronics, Computer Science departments is available to the programme. New laboratory facilities are being added to cater to the needs of undergraduate programme as well for pursuing research on continuous basis.
The department has established well functioning labs as per VTU Curriculum requirements, namely, Biochemistry lab, Cell & microbiology lab, Bioinformatics lab, Upstream & Downstream processing lab, Unit operation lab, Momentum transfer lab, Bio kinetics lab, Bioprocess Control Lab. Bioinformatics lab is equipped with 12 computers including 6 work-stations and 4 latest PCs from Sun Micro Systems.
During 2008-09, the department has added additional equipment worth Rs 2 million and another Rs 1.9 million is being added this year. Our department is recognized as research centre by Visvesvaraya Technological University from this year (2009). There are two research students already registered under our faculty, one working for Ph.D and the other for MSc(Engineering) by research degree under VTU. The Department is actively involved in research activities. The current research areas include applications of ceramic membranes for separation of Biomolecules, Abatement of Arsenic contamination from drinking water, Microbial fermentation for biotransformation analysis, Alleopathy of parthenium, Pharmacogenomics of immuno-suppressants, Enzymatic trans-esterification of non-edible oils for the production of biodiesel, etc.
