P.hd in Electronics and Communication Engineering

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering was established in the year 1968 to start a 5-year B.E. degree programme affiliated to the Madras University. The first batch of students graduated from the department in the year 1973. A post graduate programme leading to M.E. degree in 'Communication Systems' was introduced in the year 1976. Consequent upon the establishment of Bharathidasan University in Tiruchirapalli, the affiliation of both programmes were shifted to the new University from 1982 onwards. All the undergraduate programmes of the institutions were granted autonomy from the academic year 1986-87. Commencing from the academic year 1997-97, the post graduate programme in 'Communication Systems' is being funded by the Ministry of Human Resources, Govt. of India.

In the year 1998, AICTE approval was obtained for introducing a second post graduate programme in 'VLSI System'. After a brief period of affiliation to Anna University, Chennai, the institution was finally declared by Govt. of India as a National Institute of Technology with Deemed-to-be University status from 28 July 2003.

Thus from a modest beginning, the department has come a long way. Today, it is rated as one among the leading educational institutions of the country in Electronics and Communication Engineering.

The focus of the B.Tech. degree programme is on 'Wireless Communications'. The curriculum is so designed as to give adequate emphasis on the digital processing of information for efficient communication over noisy channels. In tune with the above objective, the syllabus features core courses like Statistical Theory of Communication, DSP Architectures and Systems, Communication Switching Systems, Computer Networks, Communication Electronic Circuits, Microwave Components and Circuits, Satellite Communication, Photonic Devices and Systems, giving a balanced coverage of the theory and practice of modern Communication Engineering. The core programme is supplemented and further reinforced by a well-chosen set of elective courses permitting the students to specialize either in the software or the hardware aspect of Communication Systems.

The focus of the M.Tech. degree programme in Communication Systems is a thorough and in-depth study of Communication theory from a Signal processing perspective as exemplified by courses like Advanced Digital Signal Processing, High Speed Communication Networks, Smart Antennas and Digital Communication Receivers. A broad theoretical base is provided through courses like 'Linear Operators and Integral Equations', 'Probability and Stochastic Processes' and 'Signal Detection and Estimation'. The students also undergo laboratory programmes on the design and implementation of communication subsystems based on DSP modules and MIC and Fiber-Optic Devices and Components.

The analog and digital electronics circuits have grown enormously in complexity and functionality in this IT age. To cope up with this trend, knowledge and experience on the use of computer-aided design automation tools have become mandatory. The M.Tech. degree course on 'VLSI System' provides just that to aspiring undergraduates from all branches of Electrical Sciences. In order to cater to the practical inputs required by the programme, a VLSI design laboratory equipped with FPGA CAD tools and boards from both Xilinx and Altera, complete ASIC design tool set from Cadence, Magma, Mentorgraphics, Synopsys and Coware and PCB design tools such as ORCAD and Expedition. The department is the receipient of the grant for CAD tools and guest faculty for development of man power in VLSI under the SMDP programme of department of Information technology , New Delhi.

The excellent placement record which has been consistently above 95 % for the last several years, alone of our students is ample testimony to the emphasis that has been placed on the industrial needs of our country in the curriculum which is being updated continuously with a rise to incorporating the fast-changing technological trends in the fiend of Electronics and Communication Engineering. The department has been awarded the prestigious 'A' grade for its undergraduate programme in the year 1997. The leading Electronics Industry M/s. Motorola India Electronics Ltd., Bangalore, established a DSP and Microcontroller laboratory equipment with Workstations. A state of the art microcontroller laboratory has been set up under the FIST programme of DST.

Five scholars earned their Ph.D degrees under the supervision of our faculty members while our college was affililated to the Bharathidasan University. Research work got a new impetus soon after our institute attained the deemed university status. About 12 scholars have registered for their Ph.D in diverse areas such as adhoc networks, mobile communication, smart antenna, microwave engineering, analog VLSI, pattern recognition, VLSI implementation of DSP and communication system.

The department has a close interaction with the alumni and is continuously using their inputs for improvement of the curriculum and research facilities
