The department focuses on three areas of research on reproductive tract infections (RTIs) including sexually transmitted infections (STIs).The primary objective is to develop simple, cost effective as well as sensitive diagnostic tools for reproductive tract infections (RTIs) including sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It has established diagnostic tools for common RTIs such as Candida, Trichomonas and Bacterial vaginosis (BV) in accordance with WHO criteria. Gram's staining with Nugent scoring is being used for diagnosis of BV. Simple assays have been standardised to detect "Elastase" and "Lactoferrin" in biological fluids like Urine, Semen, Serum and Cervical specimens for predicting inflammation and infections. Sensitive and specific molecular diagnostics for Chlamydia trachomatis and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) have been standardised for use in cervical / introital samples and male urine. Different ELISA is being used for antibody assays. Genotyping of HPV is also standardized and routinely in use for differentiation of HPV types .Efforts are being made to do genotyping of C.trachomatis infection. We have also reported the use of vaginal secretion pH for quick diagnosis of Bacterial vaginosis in any clinical set up.
The second objective of the department is to use the standardized techniques to study the prevalence of these infections in different population. Chlamydia infection is more among the infertile women. Our study has also shown that most of the C.trachomatis and HPV infection are asymptomatic.
The ultimate objective of the department is to study the immunopathogenesis of these diseases. Association of HLA, cytokines and receptor genes with various infections like C.trachomatis, HPV and HIV are being investigated. The study group includes women with infertility, recurrent spontaneous abortion and HIV discordant couples.
We offer services for the diagnosis and treatment of common RTIs/STIs. The department participates in external quality control programs and conducts regular training workshops on use of molecular techniques in diagnosis of RTIs/STIs. The department is recognized for Ph.D programs in Life Sciences.
