Course programme

Teaching of Geology was introduced at the undergraduate level at the Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh in the year 1949. By 1951, post-graduate programme was introduced in the teaching programme. Since then the department has made tremendous progress in all its spheres including teaching, research, field training, library and laboratory facilities. Applied Geology Course was introduced in the department since 1997-98. The department has been offering P.G. Diploma in Hydrogeology since 1974-75. The department has been active in scientific deliberations and interactions and has organized a number of scientific symposia and conferences. A few important events are as follows:Gondwana System Conference (1970), Prof. E.S. Hills Lecture Series (1972). First, Fourth Eighteenth and twenty fourth Convention of Indian Association of Sedimentologists (1976, 1984, 2001, 2008), fifth Colloquium on Micropaleontology and Stratigraphy (1976), National Conference on Pollution Stress in major Indian River Basins (1984), Indo-Soviet Symposium on Rifted Basins and Anulacogens (1990) and National Conference on the Evolution of Gondwanic Crust (1995). The Department is recognized as one of the leading centers of sedimentology in the country and is the Headquarters of Indian Association of Sedimentologists since its inception in 1976. Many of its alumni have occupied and continue to occupy positions of authority in Geological Organizations in Public and Private Sectors. The Department has so far awarded 03 D.Sc., 106 Ph.D. and 140 M.phil degrees and published more than 600 research papers in research journals of national and international repute.

The Department has been actively pursuing research in different fields with present day faculty positions of 01 Professor, 09 Readers and 12 Lecturers. The Department subscribes 11 International Journals and 12 National Journals and has a curriculum of the department includes: B.Sc.(Hons.), M.Sc. (Applied Geology) and P.G. Diploma in Hydrogeology. The Department adopted U.G.C. model curriculum in 2001-2002. The Department was sanctioned D.S.A. Phase-I (1992-1997), D.S.A. Phase-II (1998-2003) and COSIST (1998-2003). The Department organized U.G.C. sponsored Refresher Course in Geology in 2003 and also a National Conference on Groundwater management, future challenges and its impact on Environment in 2003. The Department organized the XXIV Convention of Indian Association of Sedimentologists and a National Seminar on Sedimentary Basins of India and their Economic Resources in 2008.

During last five years the department has published 27 International and 95 National level research papers. At present the Department is carrying out 13 research projects of total allocation of Rs.94.00 lacs funded by U.G.C., Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Water Resourcs, Govt. of India and Council of Science and Technology, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh. Prof. M. Raza, Dr.A.H.M. Ahmad, Reader, Dr.M.E.A. Mondal, Sr. Lecturer and Dr. M.S.Khan, Lecturer have been selected as member of National Working Group of different International Geological Correlation Programmes (IGCP). Placement scenario of the students of the department has remained very encouraging with selection of 11 students through Campus Recruitmently ESSAR, selecting of 07 students in Geological Survey of India, 02 students in ONGC during 2007-2008. Six students were selected in prestigious institutes like (IITs and ISM) for higher studies/research during the session 2007-2008. Mr. Yazil Abbas topped the All India Competitive Test (JAM) for admission to IITs in Geophysics in 2007. Ms. Sadaf Fatima topped the All India Geologists Examination conducted by UPSC in 2008.
