The mandate of the course is to train human resources in Biotechnology and to cater to the needs of the nation in harnessing the vast biodiversity and to promote bioindustries, not only in the state of Kerala but also in the country. Research activities of the Department are presently centred around areas such as Microbial Technology, Medical Biochemistry, Genetic Engineering, Molecular Neurobiology, Cell Biology and Plant Biotechnology. The research students generally get absorbed as scientists in different national and international laboratories and as lecturers in Universities/Colleges. On an average, about 60% of the M.Sc. students clear the NET and 80% pass the GATE. 31 students have so far taken their doctoral degrees from the Department, which has also about 90 scientific publication to its credit. A Centre for Neurosciences was established during 2000 in the Department with the intention of bringing the Industries, Medical Colleges, Research Institutions and Hospitals closer to its research accomplishments. The centre organizes annual workshops, meetings, lectures and awareness programmes. The centre also takes up extension activities like conducting neurological surveys, diagnosis, awareness programme, clinical and scientific testing. The research interests of the Centre include molecular aspects of Neurotransmitter receptors functional regulation in relation to Diabetes, Cell proliferation, Cancer, Herbal medicines, Alcoholism, Bone fracture healing,Stem Cell differentiation, Hypoxia, Hypoglycemia and Adrenal stress model studies. The Centre offers an elective paper in Molecular Neurobiology for M.Sc. students and other interested students in the University. It provide opportunities to do research activities in Molecular Neurobiology for students of India and abroad. The Department has linkages with R&D institutions and Industries such as Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Indian Spices Research Centre, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Amirtha Institute of Medical Sciences, Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre, Madona Hospital and Research Centre, Synthite Industries, Kerala Ayurveda Pharmacy Ltd. and Medical College, Kottayam and MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery.
