Course programme

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Aligarh Muslim University was established in 1941. It offers degrees related to Ph.D., M.Tech., B.Tech. & B.E. (Evening) programmes. Ninety two students in B.Tech. and forty two in the three M.Tech. Courses (Thermal Engineering, Industrial & Production Engg. and Machine Design) are admitted every year on the basis of written competitive tests on All- India basis. The department offers 85 UG & 33 PG Courses in various disciplines of Mechanical Engineering.

The Deptt. has a very well qualified teaching staff actively engaged in teaching & research and contributing effectively in administrative & corporate life of the campus. The faculty has published over 600 research papers in International & National Journals of repute. Their participation in the International & National Conferences and Seminars has been quite encouraging and enthusiastic. Under the modernization, TAPTEC and SAP programmes of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a number of projects of the faculty have been funded this year amounting to Rupees fifty lacs.

The experimental and computational facilities available in the department are located in the following Laboratories: Turbomachines, Fluid Mechanics, Aerodynamics, High performance computing, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Internal Combustion Engines, Heat Power, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Combustion & Pollution Control, Heat Transfer, Machinery Dynamics, Stress Analysis/Tribology, Production Engineering, Computers and Robotics, Material Science, Metrology & CNC, Quality Assurance, CAD & CAM.

We have recently established an Instructional & Research Resource Centre (IRRC) in the department to impart modern education through Multimedia Projection system. Dozens of audio-visual cassettes on state of the art information on current topics, software packages and fully furnished Conference room constitute this IRRC. Series of lectures by invited experts from Industries and Institutions are planned every year for the benefit of students and faculty.

It is heartening to note that our students are performing exceptionally well in GATE. Every year a good number of students get high percentage. We are optimistic that this graph will increase substantially in the years to come.

The students are taken on educational tour to various industries and have to undergo summer training (which is required part of curriculum) in order to acquire practical knowledge of modern machines, materials and processes. Training & Placement Office takes care of campus interviews and helps the students in getting suitable jobs.

The University Library, College Library and the Department's Seminar Library including on-line Journals on line facility provide excellent source of books and literature.

Over a dozen halls of residence, excellent sports facilities (including Riding Club, Swimming Pool, Gymnasium) and above all the beautiful AMU campus and the congenial all-around environment makes our students enjoy a comfortable and memorable stay.

The teaching and research activities of the Department of Mechanical Engineering are grouped under Thermal Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, Industrial & Production Engineering and Machine Design.

Facilities :

COMBUSTION & POLLUTION CONTROL LABORATORY:

This laboratory is equipped with Pollutant Monitoring Instruments (Chemiluminescent NOx, Gas Filter Correlation CO, Infrared CO2, Flame Ionization Total Hydro- carbon, Electrochemical O2 Analy- zers, Smoke Meter, Sample condi- tioning and Sample Transfer System for on-line quantification of major Pollutants. A Hilton's Continuous Combustion Unit, Diffusion Burners and domestic burners are available for UG/PG experiments. Research work is being carried out on the combustion characteristics and quantification of pollutants using

conventional and synthetic fuels. Burning velocity measurement studies are performed using a constant volume combustion bomb. A computerized Diesel Engine facility coupled with an eddy current dynamometer and an AVL Smoke meter has been recently added to conduct research work using biodiesel & synthetic fuels.

HEAT TRANSFER LABORATORY:

Experimental facilities for determination of thermal conductivity, Stefan-Boltzman constant, emissi- vity and heat transfer coefficient of working fluids in various configur-ations of heat exchangers, extended surfaces and condensing units, heat transfer studies on Heat Pipe and during Pool Boiling are available. Research work is also carried out on natural convection boiling and mixed convection heat transfer related to Nuclear Power Plants & safety. Considerable work has been done on the optimization and economic analysis of vapour absorption cycle. A new model for heat flow through macro-layers in pool boiling at high heat flux has been proposed. Experimental studies on solar cooker, air and water heaters have also been done.

IC ENGINES AND THERMAL ENGG. LABS:

A large number of old and new, 2 & 4-stroke, compression and spark ignition, engines fully equipped with eddy current/hydraulic dyna- mometers, & related instruments are available for undergraduate, graduate and research level experi- mental work. A Maruti Engine is a recent addition. Research work on the modeling of 2 & 4 stroke engine cycle processes is in progress.

A 40 HP five stage steam turbine, Cornish Boiler, surface condenser and converging diverging steam nozzle are available for an actual power plant study and related experiments. A modern boiler is being purchased to replace the old Cornish boiler. For students demon-stration of fundamental concepts, we have retained Babcock Wilcox and simple vertical boilers, Marshal Horizontal and vertical steam engines, various types of pumps, accessories and control valves

REFRIGERATION & AIR-CONDITIONING LABORATORY:

For undergraduate experimental work, facilities such as Ice Plant, a vapour compression refrigeration tutor, an air conditioning tutor, a 2 stage reciprocating air compressor, a Holman Centrifugal compressor and various control devices are available. Research work is being carried out in the area of heat and mass transfer analyses of food preservation.

FLUID MECHANICS/AERODYNAMICS/TURBO-MACHINES/CFD/HPC LABS

A low speed wind tunnel an open jet wind tunnel DANTEC Hot wire Anemometer and Data Acquisition System and facilities for routine fluid flow experimental studies are available. On the machines side Kaplan Turbine Francis Turbine, Pelton Turbine and various types of pumps and Ram are available for specific performance & characteristic study. A microprocessor applic-ation laboratory & computational Fluid Dynamic laboratory are recent additions. The research work is being carried out in the following areas:

 Transition to turbulence in buoyancy driven flows

 Numerical simulation of MHD flows

 Rotating convective flows

 Hypersonic flows on 2D & 3D bodies

The faculty members working in these areas have contributed large number of research papers which have been published in International Journals of repute.
