The department of microbiology at MDS University, Ajmer aims to quench the curiosity about life of organisms invisible to the naked eye. Small components are the most vital and potent parts of any system and so are microorganisms for the planet earth. Knowledge about this microcosmos shall impart deeper understanding of the life as a whole. It answers how life is sustained (evolution), whether there is life on other planets (exobiology), how do the microorganisms life (cell biology, physiology and genetics), how many different types of microorganisms are there (biodiversity), what is their role, how do they interact with other beings and what are the extremes of their life (biogeochemical cycles-ecology) and whether man can utilize them for his benefit and for the continued existence of life on earth (biotechnology, industrial, agricultural, environmental, medical, food, water and air microbiology).

A candidate for admission to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) must have obtained the Master`s degree with at least 55 percent marks at the postgraduate examination of the University or an equivalent examination recognized by the University in the subject or any allied subject in which he/she wishes to pursue research. If the candidate secures less than 55 percent marks at the postgraduate examination but has secured second division at postgraduate as well as degree level, he/she will be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.
