Ph.D. in Social Work

The University of Delhi offers Ph.D. in Social Work course to its students.

It is offered by the Department of Social Work and under the Faculty of SOCIAL SCIENCES.


Social Work education and training is responsible for developing manpower for different fields of Social Welfare. It emphasizes on practices that develop amongst its students the conviction of equality, social justice, socialism, universalism, and commitment to national integration. Social Work profession is based on the philosophy of humanitarian considerations, liberalism, and democratic values. Within the ambit of this philosophy social work methods have been developed and practiced. The social workers are trained for providing advocacy and must be able to mobilize people for participatory development and render services to the needy through methods of casework, group work, and community organization. The curriculum so developed helps students understand the consequences of social change and empowers them for intervention within the existing social infrastructure in a scientific manner.

Admission to Ph. D. course in Social Work will be open to following categories of candidates:- i) Those who have passed M. Phil. Degree Examination with 50 per cent marks in Social Work. ii) Those who have obtained the M.A. or equivalent degree with first class or 55 per cent marks or above and completed Part-I of the M. Phil. course obtaining at least Grade A iii) Those who have obtained the M.A. or equivalent degree with first or high second class and have already done research work, which has been submitted and approved in the form of a dissertation at the post-masters degree level, or have project work/published work on the subject to their credit, which in the opinion of the Departmental Research Committee (DRC) is sufficient evidence of having acquired competence to pursue research. iv) Those who are teachers of the University of Delhi and its Colleges, teachers of other Universities or Colleges, as also teachers of Foreign Universities having institutions affiliated to those Universities with a minimum of 50 per cent marks at the Masters Degree and having worked for a minimum of three years. v) Those who have the M.A. or equivalent degree with first or high second class, and have passed two courses such as those in Research Methodology and other subject(s) as may be prescribed by the DRC in each case.
