Course programme
The Centre, through its teaching programme not only sensitises the
students to gender issues and attempts to ensure a commitment to the
empowerment of women. It also provides training in all the above skills
through its curricula. The emphasis is on Practical skill training in
Project formulation, designing, monitoring, budget formulation and
analysis as well as on research training normally given in Research
degree courses such as M.Phil. Lastly and most significantly, the course
is multidisciplinary, which stands the students in good stead in any
field of activity which they may decide to pursue, whether development,
law, human rights or any other.
What is more significant from the point of view of today's market and job oriented society is the number of opportunities available in women's studies. Students can seek employment with various types of organizations - public, private, government and non-profit. Graduates find job opportunities in a variety of fields, such as government, communications and media, law, public relations, human services, research, international relations, public health and other career fields.
There are many practical applications for Women's Studies training on the job. For example, as more women work, business and corporations find the need for more sensitivity to women's issues such as sexual harassment, flexi-time, parental leave, pay equity, and equal employment opportunities. The development of women's agencies and organizations is spurring demand for persons with specializations in Women's Studies. There is growing demand in the professions of law, medicine, social work, teaching, counseling, and government service for expertise on gender issues. Similarly, women's studies specialists are increasingly being used as consultants in industry, higher education, insurance companies, and personnel firms. Perhaps most importantly, many Women's Studies graduates say that their education gave them the confidence to pursue careers traditionally held by men.
