Department of History conducts PhD in History.

The basic objectives of the Department of History is to:

* impart quality and value-based education to the students,
* encourage historical research. The long- term mission is to make the Department a Centre of Excellence in respect of North-Eastern regional research with specific focus on Assam. With that aim in view, students are encouraged to take up research projects on different aspects of North-East Indian history. Although the focus is on regional studies, we do not encourage regional studies in isolation. Our course is designed in such a manner so as to provide an in-depth study of the history of our country in a global setting. Through discussions and seminars we try to expose our students to new ideas and make them aware of new trends in history- writing,
* cater to the all-round development of the students by encouraging them to actively participate in co-curricular activities, so as to make them competent and become responsible citizens of the country.
